  • A stopwatch
  • Calculator
Welcome Scouts

Intro: Who can tell me what the word Cardio means? Heart. So what is our heart? It is a muscle. What happens when we don't use our muscles? They become weaker and more fragile. So we want to strengthen our hearts. What are some ways that we can do that? How do we know how strong our hearts are? You can take your heart rate.

Show scouts how to find a pulse.

Have them find their pulse.

Find their heart rate by having them count how many beats they have in 10 seconds then times that by six or six seconds and times their number by 10.

Have everyone walk around for five minutes. Walk not run.

Take heart rate again.

Jog/speedwalk/run for five minutes and then take heart rate again.

Let them get a drink and gather back up. Discuss the importance of cardio health and the risks of having bad health. How can we strengthen our heart a little every day? Does it have to be boring like walking or running on a treadmill? No it can be fun.

Play a game such as sharks and minnows or a form of tag.
